The Farm Credit System makes its presence felt from a legislative standpoint through the efforts of the Farm Credit Council — a group made up of Farm Credit members from both the District and the National levels. The National Farm Credit Council concerns itself with agriculture and ag lending matters on Capitol Hill and is in constant contact with Association boards and policy makers on “The Hill,” serving as a liaison between the two. As one might guess, subjects requiring attention range from the Farm Bill, conservation, lending practices, trade policy, governmental outreach and controls, through a myriad of other ag issues. The Council is a very important part of the Farm Credit System.

A highlight of the FCC’s work comes each summer, an event called the “Farm Credit Fly-in.” Farm Credit directors from all over the country descend on Washington, D.C. to meet with policy makers, bringing forward our concerns with one voice. I, myself, have participated in these events more than once, each time coming away impressed with the reception we receive. The Farm Credit System is well respected and highly regarded for its mission and performance.

I’d like to extend appreciation to our Arkansas delegation, namely Senators John Boozman and Tom Cotton, and Representatives Rick Crawford, French Hill, Steve Womack, and Bruce Westerman. While directors from other states meet with their states’ delegates individually when possible, these six legislators together graciously attend a breakfast sponsored by the four Arkansas Farm Credit Associations, usually in an office in the Senate Office Building. We are certainly the envy of other directors throughout the country, as we talk and listen over a coffee pot and a breakfast buffet to the issues of the day with our elected officials. It truly is a testament to these folks’ willingness to listen and serve, as they realize the importance of agriculture and ag lending to our state and nation. Rest assured, our Senators and Representatives “know ag.” Hats off and many thanks for your service!

To say efforts like those described above are necessary is a gross understatement. In my mind, it’s more important than ever in today’s world to showcase and extol things that “work;” things that are successful, worthy, and provide a service to our citizens. The Farm Credit cooperatives “work.” They work because of our Members and our employees, and the diligence and vision they possess.

As a director and Board chair, it is a pleasure to serve such a wonderful group of people. On behalf of the entire Board, thank you for the opportunity to serve.
